This speaks to the heart. The Buddhist philosophy Being nobody, going nowhere. As a forever entrepreneur, everything I made or got involved in I have tried to turn into a money maker. It's exhausting and zaps every bit of pleasure. It's taken me a lifetime to just be and do without an ulterior motive. God it's a relief. Every Substack post I see trying to sell something makes me nauseous. I'm so with you and your mutley menagerie. xoLA
Thank you LA! I had a friend who used to blow glass beads and she had this really cool set up and studio in the corner of her "office" where she did interior design work for some firm. They were glorious and colorful and I was FOREVER trying to understand (and coerce) her to sell them! Make jewelry! Get a shop! and she always said, "Why would I ruin my hobby? It's my greatest pleasure!" and I didn't get it. Ugh the forever entrepreneur! You get it. It's the first thing that my brain (monkey mind?) jumps to. Ohhhh, that's a nice storefront, would be great for a pastry shop. That's a great place to put bike rentals. Someone should put a coin laundry in town. Why is there no coffee? My higher self sort of chimes in, don't ask for trouble! I don't think I've ever made anything that I didn't think I'd sell and so since there's no market for anything here besides beer and bingo I don't create. So I'm working on that. I watched a video the other day of a lady who made tea stained paper and then just made some easy peasy binders and decorated a cover just to make journals. Just for her. Just for the shelf. I think I'll give it a try. :-)
Great post, Lola. I definitely relate to the allure of a new project, or for me, getting enticed by a new way to share something (writing, art, ideas) and then, sometimes, how to sell it. Always learning and reminding myself not to get lost in the "doing". Dusty with his bone like a good book! Perfection.
Thanks Teresa! I had a coworker who would see my wheels spinning if I made something "clever" or that I felt had a broad appeal and he'd say (in Spanish) Abre la fabrica! (open the factory!) and it snapped me out of it. Usually. The lady who invented Spanx (cut the feet out of her pantyhose and went into production for similar organ smashing products, do you have those in the UK?) is from my hometown and is a similar age. I'll take a wild guess that she's not thinking about living in the Mexican desert feeding abandoned dogs. But if she is, give her my email.
