At 1:20 am (for the 8th time) I was in my bathrobe running with a broom stick and a bucket of water in the street. Sneakers, underpants maybe topless under the terrycloth. Doing my bear growl which is inaudible over the car speakers of cruising dune buggies and trucks for Semana Santa/Holy Week.
"Semana Santa" is Spring Break in Mexico when you sleep off your hangover in Church and groan at tone deaf choir and once la cruda wears off around noon you start boozing again until last man standing. For a week. There might be a ceviche and some carne asada in there. I am loony from lack of sleep, barking dogs and defeat. The guy running the beer store looks the same. Dealing with animals. By 7pm last night there were people everywhere passed out in the streets. I've been a non drinker for a few years but it always feels like "holidays" are just an excuse to get shitfaced. It's a full moon, it's Mexico, things have 'done got' weird a long time ago and street dogs are not immune to these energies. Last Spring was tame because everyone was still limping around in worthless masks whimpering about C o v i d. This year they're making up for it.
WHO ARE ALL THESE RANDOM MALES?
Andie the cute, teddy bear faced collie mix feral that I have made progress with over the year by catching and spaying (a feat in itself) is in another heat. Stronger and longer than the last. The vet only takes the uterus out in our camp spay situation and I since have read that even a shred of ovary left in the cavity is enough to create a hormone surge. Andie and the rest of these wild dogs are Ninja strong and I have to feel that nature has won. And of course it has. She can't get pregnant, but the rest of the heat cycle remains, the parts that suck...the suitors, the bloody mess, the constant sex and even the neutered males and the females are super randy. This makes running a rescue alone and without crates, a real pain in the ass.
In a town with no resources, no animal control, no vet. A REAL CHALLENGE. And oh, everyone is drunk. Or praying. A very Mexican weekend.
So I laugh at 7am when I grab the water bucket again. I have clothes on this time but what makes me think this will help now? One dog looked at me and just blinked after an entire bucket went through the gate and 8 angry dogs barked at him. He's either not all there or he's seen worse. I don't recognize any of these dogs who have come to sample. A real rag tag crew. Maybe they're in town with other people who let their intact males outside in a strange town? Or maybe they're from another side of the beach. Andie doesn't seem to mind at all. Whatever ovary she has inside has given her super powers. No sleep no food tons of running and definitely into the endless sex with tons of males. Even her son. It's disgusting and there's nothing I can do.
I've seen some lewd acts that I didn't even know dogs did. These animals are not the terriers you adopt at the PetsMartz shelter. These are more like wild hyenas high on Molly in Amsterdam. I have one intact male still, Rocky, Andie's pup who is now almost a year and mostly a goofy big puppy but muscular and fast. He crashed the door and chased the others with a fervor that old Pedro and some other neutered and tired uncles could not. I just let him go. Whatever powerball hormone everyone is s norting for spring I have none of and a couple days ago was on my ass vomiting for 18 hours for Who Knows What Now (full moon migraine) so I'm out of ideas and energy for this episode Wild Kingdom. I want someone to yell CUT! And all the real animal tamers come in and secure the scene.
No one is coming.
The Pastor's Wife joins me sometimes in the crazy haired water bucket chase. She says to spray Andie's backside with perfume. I am pretty sure that will do nothing but I don't have any so it's moot. No one else can even get within 5 feet of her.
The best I can do is lure Andie inside, get her away from the gates, hope she sleeps, keep the barking at bay in the 'hood, keep my shreds of sanity and wait for next week when someone sobers up and can drive in to do another complete spay and maybe drive out with some of these wild dogs to animal control in another town. the males like fighting and testosterone is a hell of a chemical. I've seen near lift offs over fences and houdini moves that are incredulous. The Town does nothing. The people complain and the goofballs with pencil pushing govt jobs act like they've got something in the works but nothing is in the works. A van might come and dispatch some dogs but it'll be on the hush hush. And not the right dogs and not with any humanity. Rat poison in a hotdog usually just orphans puppies and then they all spread Parvo and die painful deaths. I am realizing (stubbornly) that I will change nothing. The best I can hope for is to Harriet Tubman pipeline the good ones out.
I'll try to ignore the disgusting array of red swollen unretractable dog di cks hanging out everywhere leaking fluid. Put in my earplugs for the annoying church music that starts the minute the last reggaeton ranchero dj passes out. It's only Saturday. We've gotta keep it together. A lot of these good dogs deserve to get out of here, please share and consider adopting. Everyone is vaccinated, potty trained, most are leash trained as well and have basic training, sit, stay etc.
I can have the dogs transported for $85 to Rocky Point/Puerto Penasco at AZ border near Why/Ajo AZ or Nogales or you can drive in and pick up. Puerto Libertad, Sonora, MX.

All dogs are socialized and good with other dogs, I am unsure about cats but would doubt it. Small children need to be supervised around dogs regardless of dog. That's up to you.
